Kate Howk is a sophomore History/RTF major from Amarillo, Texas and a Fall 2016 NUGI. She has been very present this semester and is a wonderful friend to everyone she knows. Outside of LHS, she is the founder and president of Horns Against Hunger, a new student org that aims to end weekend hunger in Austin public schools.
What is on your playlist right now?
I've been listening to a new-ish band called AJR for a few weeks now. The band is made up of these three brothers who compose all of their own material in their living room. They make music that's meant to be listened to when you just want to smile, and when it boils down to it that's my favorite kind.
What is your favorite Longhorn Singers event or tradition?
Truly, nothing beats waking up at 3 in the morning to sing for the Dallas Morning News and show off all of our hard work in front of the OU ensemble. They've got some talented singers, but we're better- I'll say it. Because I have a competitive nature and I chose to join a show choir instead of an intramural team, I have to take a win where I can get it. It's my favorite gig of the weekend every year, and it's fun to see the NUGIs get passionate about our performance and pass it on to the next round of newcomers.
Do you have any hidden talents?
I can find the silverware drawer in any house on the first try almost every time. If you think that's useless, think of every occasion where you've gone to visit a friend in their home and looked through every nook and cranny to find a spoon, and then we'll talk. While you're still searching for a utensil, I'll have already finished my soup.
Is there anyone in LHS you would like to give a shoutout to? Why?
I love Sofia Piña! She's a great duet partner, a good listener, and an even better friend. We both love to laugh so when we're together we spend a lot of time doing just that. From the first time that I saw her play a recorder with her nose, I knew we would be a good match. It also helps that I think all of her jokes are a home run.
Welcome to the official Longhorn Singers blog! Here, you can get to know the Singers better, as well as find more information about what we're doing in rehearsals, how the show is coming along, when we are selling tickets, and details about performances each semester! Updates will occur periodically throughout the year, so stay tuned!
