Rachel is a Junior Communication Sciences and Disorders major from Plano, Texas and a Spring 2016 NUGI. She was recently honored with the "Emerging Leader" award for her work with DKMS, a nonprofit organization that aims to expand the international bone marrow donor registry for patients with leukemia and other blood disorders. Outside of LHS, she is President of DKMS Delete Blood Cancer and a member of StuMo and NSSLHA. We are so proud of you, Rachel!
How did you get involved in DKMS?
I decided to get involved with DKMS because my mom has had leukemia twice and received a lifesaving bone marrow transplant last April. Fortunately, she recently went into remission. I started hosting donor swab drives on campus last fall and am currently the president of the organization at UT. I am so thankful for DKMS and their mission. Definitely check them out and sign up to be a bone marrow donor if you haven’t already!
What is on your playlist right now?
I love country music. Some of my favorites right now are "Me and My Kind" by Cody Johnson and "Fast Cars Slow Kisses" by Aaron Watson. My favorite song from our upcoming show would have to be Queen's "Don’t Stop Me Now."
What is your favorite Longhorn Singers event or tradition?
Definitely NUGI weekend! Welcoming the new members and buying them random things is always so much fun. It’s a great way to catch up with everyone after we haven’t seen each other over winter break or summer.
Do you have any hidden talents?
I like to waterski. I can slalom (one ski) with the handle between my knees!
